Fire Prevention Week

Saturday, October 5, 2013  October is fire prevention month.  We proactively get out to the community and schools to teach our fire safety messages to children and adults alike. We would like to remind you to test your smoke detectors, they can save a life.  As the cold weather comes upon us please have your heater checked and serviced.  And make sure you have a co detector on each level of your house along with your smoke detectors.

Wednesday night, October 9th, starting at 7pm we will be hosting our annual Fire Prevention Show.  There will be multiple trucks on display, live fire demonstration, fire extinguisher training, give away's, and light refreshments.  This year we will be debuting the new Fire Safety Trailer that was recently awarded to 5 local Fire Companies that joined forces together applying for a grant to receive this trailer!

Historic Day for Norwood Fire Company

Thursday, June 27, 2013  Norwood Fire Company has been located at 26 West Winona Avenue since November of 1902. We have occupied the same building for 111 years with many major upgrades done to the building over the years to support the growth and changing of times until we could no longer fit in the current location. Today is our final day as owners of 26 West Winona Avenue. The old firehouse is sold and tomorrow the new owners will take the keys. The members have been working very hard the last few weeks packing and moving everything from the old station along with construction at the new station.

Live Burn

Sunday, April 28, 2013  This morning members attended a live burn drill at the Training Center with Company 21.  Crews rotated between Engine Co and Truck Co operations and mixed in with 21's crews.  The companies worked well together accomplishing the tasks at hand during the morning.  Thank you to Captain Sullivan and Company 21 for the invite!

Help us with our new home

Tuesday, April 9, 2013  The Norwood Fire Co., in conjunction with the Borough of Norwood, is having a new firehouse built.  We are hoping that the new building, which is located on the most prominent intersection in town, will become a showcase for the town, and possibly act as a catalyst for ongoing improvements along Norwood’s stretch of Chester Pike and Winona Ave.  As you might expect, obtaining the funds necessary to complete the project has been, and will continue to be, an ongoing challenge for our small fire company.   As it stands now, very soon we’ll be forced to move into the new building well before it is completed, resulting in operational inefficiencies, uncomfortable working conditions, additional day-to-day costs, and an overall difficult work environment for both our emergency services ambulance personnel and our volunteer firefighters.  Despite this situation, our goal is to maintain the level of emergency responsiveness that the residents of Norwood, and the surrounding communities, have come to trust from the Norwood Fire Co.

The entire non-truck room half of the building is currently an empty shell, and it looks like it will remain in that state until long after we move our equipment and personnel to the new building in late spring.    Our offices, meeting and training rooms, bathrooms, ambulance supply areas, and crew quarters need serious effort.   We’ve been very happy and grateful that a few local residents and companies  have volunteered their trades talent and experience to assist with this project, and we’ll be coordinating those efforts over the coming weeks.  And we’re hoping that more local residents and businesses will step up to push this construction project towards full completion.  If you’ve got carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, painting, flooring, or any other experience that applies to a construction project of this nature, any assistance would be most appreciated.  We’re also looking for contributions or great discounts on the various building materials needed.

If you are in a position to help those who will not hesitate to help you under the most serious of conditions, we’re eager to hear from you.  Please contact Don Masci at our billing line 610-583-1776 and leave a message. We will be happy to answer any questions, arrange a walk-thru of the building, whatever you need.

Thank you

Saturday, March 9, 2013   It's time to change your clocks so please do not forget to change the batteries in your smoke and CO detectors. If you are a Norwood resident and need a smoke detector you can contact the firehouse and we will supply one and assist you with installing it if needed. Also review your family escape plan in case of emergencies in the home and inspect extinguishers you have in the home.

Chimney Fire in the Local

Tuesday, March 5, 2013  In the middle of drill on familiarization of air packs the box alarm for 201 West Amosland Ave was struck bringing Company's 2, 5, 8, 43, and RIT 9.  The Engine was quickly out and upon arrival under 02-12 (Masci) crews had fire showing from the chimney.  Ladder 43 arrived and took the D side and put the main up and Tower 5 arrived and took the A side and put the Tower in service.  Engine 2's crew investigated the fire place while Engine 8 took the second floor.  Tower 5 dropped chains down the chimney to assist the Engine crews with extinguishing the fire.  Crews checked for extension and found none.
